Managing in the Digital World
According to Wikipedia, an information system (IS) is an organized system for the collection, organization, storage and communication of information. The usage of Information System is very high in this 21st century, from delivery trucks to track routes and track its packages until smart home electronics. Big cities in United States using adaptive traffic control systems to manage its traffic flow so their traffic won’t be congested, and using variable speed limits to control vehicles speed, that’s Information Systems and IT things. It is inseparable from our daily lives in a city, so that’s why Information Systems is really important.
Living in 21st century really make daily activities much easier, because we have Self-Parking System that developed by Volvo, a car company. They are using smart phone app to control their vehicle, and instruct the cars to park, just in one gentle touch in smart phone. Are our future is full of autonomous machine?
In 1959, Peter Drucker predicted that information and information technology would become increasingly important, and at that point, over half a century ago, he coined the term knowledge worker. Knowledge workers are typically professionals who are relatively well educated and who create, modify, and/or synthesize knowledge as a fundamental part of their jobs. Drucker also predicted that, with the growth in the number of knowledge workers and with the rise in importance and leadership, a knowledge society would emerge. There are many alternatives to the term “knowledge society”. Others have referred to this phenomenon as the knowledge economy, new economy, the digital society, the network era, the Internet era, and other names. We simply refer to this as Digital World.
Many people believe that we are living in a post-PC era, what does it mean? It means that we are living in an era where PC is connected and PC is changed with bigger system. How do we know? Because we are living in a era with increased collaboration, ability to manage business in real time, and several ways to reach customers just with one sophisticated system.
Over 1.28 billion (and growing) Facebook users share status updates or pictures with friends and family. Organizations use social media to encourage employee collaboration or to connect with their customers. Devices have embedded computers and sensors, enabling connectivity over the Internet. By 2008, more devices were connected to the Internet than people living on earth.
Web technologies enable using the Internet as the platform for applications and data. Many regard cloud computing as the beginning of the “fourth wave”. Applications that used to be installed on individual computers are increasingly kept in the cloud.
IS ETHICS :
IS Ethics describes the moral issues and standards of conduct as they pertain to the use of information systems by collecting and analyzing user data may have negative impacts like social decay, increased consumerism, and loss of privacy.
